zapret alternative with a simple app
A fair look at zapret and its Windows bundles: what they do best, where users get stuck, and when a simpler app like GreenTunnel fits better.
If you searched for a "zapret alternative", you have probably used zapret or one of its Windows bundles, and something about it got in your way. Maybe it was an antivirus alert, a strategy that stopped working, or simply too many .bat files. This page compares zapret with GreenTunnel as fairly as we can. We make GreenTunnel, so we are biased. That is why every pain point below links to a public source, and why we start with what zapret does well.
What zapret is, and what it does well
zapret is a DPI-bypass toolkit written by bol-van and published under the MIT license. It works by changing how the first packets of a connection look, so that a filter which reads the site name (SNI) or the HTTP Host header fails to match it. It is the same family of technique we explain in SNI filtering and TLS record splitting, but zapret offers far more knobs.
Its strengths are real:
- Power and depth. zapret has a very wide set of desync methods and options, and many advanced users consider it the reference tool in this space.
- Automatic strategy search.
blockcheck.shtries many combinations against a blocked site on your connection and reports which ones work. That saves hours of guessing. - Routers and servers. It runs on Linux and OpenWrt routers, so one install can cover every device on a home network, including TVs and consoles that cannot run an app.
- Many platforms. Linux, FreeBSD and OpenBSD, partial macOS support, and Windows through
winws. Aninstall_easy.shscript helps set it up on Linux-like systems. - Active project. As of November 2026 the latest release in the original repository is v72.13. Its README says that version now receives only bug fixes, and that active development continues in zapret2.
If you are comfortable with a terminal and like to tune things, zapret gives you more control than GreenTunnel does. We say that plainly.
The Windows bundles: zapret-discord-youtube
Many Windows users never touch zapret directly. They download a bundle such as Flowseal/zapret-discord-youtube, an MIT-licensed project with tens of thousands of stars on GitHub. It ships winws, the WinDivert driver, domain lists and a set of ready-made strategy files (general.bat, general (ALT).bat and many variants). A service.bat menu installs a strategy as a Windows service, runs diagnostics and tests strategies.
This makes zapret far easier to start with on Windows. It also means the user picks between many strategy files, and the README advises trying another one when the current one stops working.
Where users run into trouble
None of these points are hidden. Most come from the bundle's own README or from its public issue tracker, and they reflect how WinDivert-based tools work on Windows in general.
Antivirus alerts
WinDivert can capture and modify network traffic, which is exactly what makes it useful and also why security software is wary of it. The Flowseal README notes that some antivirus products flag it as a risky tool, for example as "Not-a-virus:RiskTool", and suggests adding an exclusion. Users have opened issues after their antivirus reported the release as malware (#14004) or removed WinDivert so that zapret no longer started (#11663).
DNS is a separate job
The README tells users to turn on Secure DNS in their browser or in Windows on their own. That is reasonable, because zapret focuses on packet desync. But it means a second setting to get right, and a site blocked by DNS will still fail if that step is skipped.
Games and anti-cheat
The README also mentions that WinDivert can conflict with anti-cheat software and points to extra steps. Users have reported a game closing the bundle (#16044), and game servers sometimes need extra lists (#2354, League of Legends).
Strategies that stop working
Filters change, and a strategy that worked last week can fail today. When several services broke at once in October 2025, users compared notes in a long thread (#5704). In the main zapret tracker, a router user reported that Discord voice stopped working while text still worked (#455). This affects every DPI-bypass tool, GreenTunnel included. The difference is only in how you find the next working setting.
Removing it
Because a strategy can run as a Windows service, closing the window does not always stop it. One user reported that zapret still worked after removal and several restarts (#10954). The fix is to remove the service through the menu first, which is easy once you know it.
How GreenTunnel approaches the same problem
GreenTunnel is a local VPN app for Android, iPhone and iPad, macOS, Windows and Linux. It runs on your device, with no relay server run by us, and uses the same basic idea of reshaping the first TLS and HTTP packets. It trades depth for a simpler setup:
- One app, one switch. No strategy files. A light default technique is applied to secure sites, with automatic fallback to other techniques when one fails.
- Encrypted DNS built in. DoH and DoT with Cloudflare, Google and Quad9, always on while protection runs. See encrypted DNS.
- Inspect URL instead of a strategy script. It checks one site on your network, tells you whether the block is fake DNS, name filtering or an IP block, and which technique opens it. A Use this technique button applies the result. It tests far fewer combinations than
blockcheck.sh, but needs no terminal. See how to read Inspect URL. - Requester. See which apps connect where and how each connection was handled. See Requester.
- Always direct. Keep a bank or a game out of any reshaping, from Settings or straight from Requester.
- Wintun on Windows, not WinDivert. The Windows app uses a background service and a network adapter named GreenTunnel, built on the Wintun driver from the WireGuard project. The service and adapter are removed when you uninstall. See installing on Windows.
We do not claim that no security product or anti-cheat will ever object to GreenTunnel. We have not tested every one. If a game complains, turn protection off while you play, or add the game's domains to Always direct.

Who should keep zapret, and who may prefer an app
Keep zapret if
- You want to protect a whole home network from an OpenWrt or Linux router.
- You run it on a Linux server or like tuning desync parameters by hand.
- You need a method or option that GreenTunnel does not offer. zapret has many more.
An app like GreenTunnel may suit you if
- You want the same tool on your phone and your PC, with no scripts.
- You want encrypted DNS and the bypass in one switch.
- You want to understand why a site fails before changing settings.
- You would rather not manage antivirus exclusions for WinDivert.
Do not run both at once on the same PC. Two tools rewriting the same packets will confuse each other. Remove the zapret service through its menu before you try GreenTunnel, and test the same site on the same network for a fair comparison.
Honest limits
Neither tool hides your IP address, and neither is an anonymity tool. Both only help against DNS- and SNI/DPI-based blocking. If a network blocks a server's IP address, blocks a protocol, or shuts the connection down, no local trick will help. In that case GreenTunnel Premium can send selected sites through a proxy or WireGuard server that you run or choose yourself.
FAQ
Is GreenTunnel based on zapret?
No. GreenTunnel has its own engine. Both use well-known ideas such as splitting the first packet or the TLS record, but GreenTunnel does not include zapret's code.
Is GreenTunnel more powerful than zapret?
No. zapret is more configurable and runs on routers. GreenTunnel aims to be easier, with encrypted DNS, a site checker and a per-app view in one app.
Does GreenTunnel use WinDivert?
No. On Windows it creates its own network adapter with Wintun, run by a background service. The adapter is only active while protection is on.
Will GreenTunnel fix Discord voice?
Not always. Voice uses UDP, which the packet tricks of either tool cannot reshape. If voice is blocked on your network, routing it through your own WireGuard server with Tunnel Link is the reliable option.
